It might be "Plantar Fasciitis". We’ve had a recent increase in patients with plantar fasciitis. I tend to believe this is partly due to the nice weather we are having which results in people being more active and to better patient education on our part. So what is plantar fasciitis and how can a chiropractor help with it?
Plantar fasciitis is when the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed and results in pain. Most people report feeling “a marble” or “stone” in the bottom of their foot. Typically, the pain is worse in the morning, but can be present throughout the day.
What is “fascia”? Fascia is another term for connective tissue. Connective tissue hold different things together and is found throughout your body surrounding muscles, organs, and joints. Plantar fascia connects your heel bone (calcaneus) to the bones that make up your toes (metatarsals). It is relatively thick and tough as its job is to support your feet.
What causes the fascia to become inflamed? As your foot moves through the walking motion, the fascia is stretched, then relaxed. This repetitive motion can cause tears, thus leading to inflammation and pain. Most commonly, runners and athletes suffer from this condition, but we see it in a variety of patients. People who stand for long periods of time, people with very flat feet, or people who wear uncomfortable shoes also may have plantar fasciitis.
How can a chiropractor help this condition? In our office, we use a combination of therapies. First we will use an instrument assisted soft tissue therapy called ConnecTx. We are trained and certified in this therapy and have wonderful results with it. The idea behind ConnecTx is that we will break up any adhesions in the fascia and promote healing in the area. This will cause the body to form new fascia and with a few treatments, the new fascia will form in the correct manner without painful tears or adhesions. Then we will adjust the joints within the foot. We like to use a “speeder board” for the adjustments, but we also do typical manual adjusting as well. This promotes proper biomechanics and alignment of the foot during the healing process. Finally, we use Rock Tape to provide extra healing and support during the treatment. We are certified in Rock Tape and know the proper way to apply the tape for the best results. The tape increases blood flow to the area by lifting the layers of skin, fascia, and muscle. Fresh blood flow brings essential nutrients to the newly forming fascia.
Typically, we see an improvement after the first visit! After about 6 visits, the patients are reporting noticeably less pain and improvement in their activities. We’ve even had some patients cancel their steroid injection appointments because they were pain free! Pretty amazing right?
Try giving chiropractic care a chance for your plantar fasciitis pain! Wouldn’t it be great to stop taking pain medications and receiving steroid injections? A natural approach to this condition is so simple, but yet people don’t realize that chiropractors can help with it! If you know of anyone who may benefit from this therapy, pass the word along!
